Additional Information

Forensic Nursing Network will offer various perspectives on supporting victims during Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault (DFSA) exams, evidence collection, and law enforcement investigations. Marc LeBeau, Senior Forensic Toxicologist from the FBI Laboratory in Quantico Virginia will lead the discussion with an overview of DFSA crimes and investigative challenges. He will also discuss the connections to alcohol and other drugs seen in these assaults. This will be followed by an advocate that will highlight the significance of patient-centered care for DFSA survivors. A forensic nurse will explain their role in providing medical forensic care, emphasizing the importance of consent, and addressing the challenges when patients initially cannot consent to evidence collection. The session will cover the procedures for collecting, storing, and maintaining the chain of custody for DFSA specimens. Law enforcement and Special Prosecution attorneys will discuss utilizing evidence for DFSA investigations and prosecutions, sharing scenarios, best practices for obtaining evidence, and the importance of collaboration throughout the investigation and prosecution of drug-facilitated sex crimes.
