This two-day training will cover the following topics:

Day 1: 

Voices From the System: Foster Care From All Perspectives

  • Four people with different experiences related to foster care come together: a former foster child, a police officer, a case worker, and a foster parent. Each panel member shares their own perspective on the foster care system.

It Takes A Village: ACEs and PACEs

  • This educational model explains how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) impact human development. It introduces Protective Compensatory Experiences (PACEs) as essential for countering childhood trauma.

Pediatric Mock Trial Simulation

  • The pediatric mock trial presentation demonstrates the legal and medical processes in a child abuse case, focusing on the teamwork between advocates, forensic nurses, law enforcement, and attorneys. 

Day 2: 

The CASA / GAL Role: A Voice for Children

  • A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) or GAL (Guardian ad Litem) is a volunteer appointed by a judge to help children in abuse, neglect, or dependency cases. 

Elevating Advocacy: Children's Advocacy Centers and the Power of Collaboration

  • Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) and Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) are essential for handling child abuse cases through teamwork. This presentation will explain the structure, purpose, and impact of CACs and MDTs, using key data and statistics. 

Youth Exposed to Domestic Violence: Overview of Trauma, Impact, and Risks

  • Witnessing a parent's victimization by a partner who batters leads to significant psychological and emotional challenges for youth. Patterns of power and control affect bonding and development. Witnessing this can cause emotional trauma, behavioral issues, and trauma responses. 

Mandated Reporting - DV & Children

  • "Mandated Reporting - DV & Children" explains the duties of mandated reporters in domestic violence (DV) cases involving children. It covers legal requirements, signs of abuse, reporting procedures, and the importance of professional collaboration.

Victim to Victory

  • The presentation begins with the family's background and dynamics, explaining how grooming leads to abuse. It details the development of a sexual relationship with the predator, followed by the kidnapping incident, the predator's arrest, and the impact on the victim and family, shown in a powerful video.
